I just browsed through my spam folder and found this email. I thought it was a hoax so I immediately emailed support. Turns out that it’s true. PayFree.com.ph indeed closed down.

“Payfree is an eWallet+ payment solution that incorporates SMS-based applications to pay or get paid online or thru POS (point-of-sale) transactions. It provides value, convenience and security.
It also features several value added services such discounted voip calls and electronic loading of prepaid cell phone credits for all of its members. It secures members from the dangers of online credit card fraud since credit card details will not be revealed to merchants. View the uses of payfree.“ — from the PayFree website.
Here’s what the email says:
Dear valued customers,
Please be informed that Payfree will no longer be operational by the end of this month. It has been a long and tough journey for all of us but we have learned so much throughout the course of doing business and are looking forward to creating new and relevant solutions in other markets and industries.
You will have time to withdraw whatever remaining balances you have in your Payfree e-wallets and facilitate any other transactions (cash-ins, fund transfers, e-loading, etc.) until next week. We will no longer process user transactions by November 30, 2012.
We’d like to thank you for your patronage these past few years. Thank you for using our services!
Sincerely,
the Payfree Team
Although I’ve signed-up as member and never used the service, I still feel sad to see another online money service company close down. It’ll probably take a few more years before the Philippines would jump into the online money service with both feet.
Meantime, you can visit their website and learn about the service you and I never got to use.

Let me know what you think… :)
